CONSTITUTIVE MODELLING AND NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF THE HUMAN AORTA FONDECYT 11090266

The main objective of this project is the modelling, numerical simulation and experimental validation of the mechanical response of the human aorta. The need of achieving a better understanding of the mechanical response of the artery wall leads to the development of constitutive models that may provide useful information not only for medical diagnosis and therapies of the related patologies but also for potential optimization of medical treatments. One of the major challenges involved in the formulation of these models is the definition of realistic and reliable stress-strain relationships of the vessel depending in turn of both its type (i.e., ascending, aortic arch, descending or abdominal aortas), age and pathological level.
